Future of Manchester Transport is Electric
Electric vehicles are currently exempt from London’s congestion charge and do not have to pay road tax as they do not emit any carbon dioxide.
Amongst the vehicles on display by the Battery Vehicle Society will be the modern Berlingo Electrique, a MegaVan, a new Vectrix scooter and the historic Sinclair C5 (1985). Visitors will also be invited to two talks during the day, which will cover how different car batteries perform, and one of the first electric car journeys in 1897.
Mary Perkins of the Battery Vehicle Society said: “Electric vehicles are a great alternative to oil-fuelled cars and could be an option for many people in Manchester if the congestion charge comes in. Electric vehicles have developed enormously in recent years. They are really cost effective and can perform just as well as the oil-guzzling competitors. Do come along to the Museum and take this opportunity to see them in action and ask us any questions.”
The first electric car models were developed as early as the 1890s, but they were quickly out-priced by cheaper oil-fuelled cars. However, environmental concerns, the London congestion charge and more competitive prices have led to a recent rise in use of electric vehicles.
