Revealing Histories, Remembering Slavery
The Revealing Histories, Remembering Slavery project brings together eight museums in Greater Manchester to mark the bicentenary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. The partnership made a successful application for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. This grant is being used to run a series of events and create new displays at partner museums.
MOSI's star exhibit is a Union patriotic envelope, displayed in our Textiles Gallery. It features a cartoon and poem that highlight the link between the American Civil War and the Lancashire cotton industry. We are planning to create a larger, permanent Remembering Slavery exhibit as a legacy of the bicentenary.
Few items in our collections are as directly related to transatlantic slavery as the envelope, but many have hidden connections. We have selected ten more items for a Remembering Slavery trail. If you can suggest other items that could be added to the trail, please let us know.
